Chapter Seventeen

Sage:

I curled up next to him, running my fingers through his hair, kissing his face, wishing this moment didn’t have to end. I knew I was playing with fire and my absence was probably going to be noticed before long, but I didn’t want to go.

This was the kind of shit that got people in my career shot. Feelings. Getting sloppy. Lack of focus. When he worked together, he was the way I stayed grounded. He was the way I washed myself of the sins of the day. Now that he’s on the other side, there was no grounding me. I was playing through a loop in my mind of how I was going to get out of this whole operation and it made me angry at myself. My career was my life. It was the only thing I was good at. The only thing I had going for me. If I separated myself from that,

He was too good for me. Too good for me as he took my hand in his, kissing my fingers. Too good for me as he rolled over and put his face right in mine so I could study every line. I was tempted to lay here all night pretending like we were the only two people in the world.

“What are you doing here, Sage?” he asked.

“You know I can’t tell you much. It wouldn’t be safe for either of us.”

He blinked his eyes closed and I found myself so caught up in the beauty of his eyelashes. Perfection. Every part of him was literally perfect. He made me stupid.

“There’s a video. And a missing woman. Some really horrific shit,” I said, knowing I was taking a huge risk. In this moment, his loyalty was to me, but in his new life, he had a motorcycle club to take care of. I had to be careful how I worded things.

“You have to go,” he said, to my surprise. He hugged me tighter, his body rejecting his words. As right as they were. “I’m proud of you, Sage.”

“You’re not going to beg me to stay?”

“I’m not going to take this away from you. As far as I’m concerned, you’re already mine.” He nuzzled his beard into my back and I shivered. I had so much I wanted to say, so many ways I wanted to tell him how ‘his’ I actually was, but I couldn’t do this tonight. Especially not with the job at hand. He was right. I needed to go. I needed to go on and do exactly what I came here to do, which was not fall into bed and blow this whole mission on account of my feelings. “I’ll do whatever I can to support you, Sage. We might be on other sides of the field now, but I don’t ever want to take something away from you that you can’t get back.”

“Like my virginity?”

He looked at me with confusion, his eyes studying mine. “That’s what you want to call it? We can call it that.
